CMU Block Walls in Houston
The Strength of Concrete Masonry
A CMU wall is built from concrete masonry units, the hollow gray blocks most people call cinder blocks or concrete blocks. Laid in mortar and reinforced with steel and grout, a block wall outlasts wood and vinyl fences by decades. It also blocks noise, resists fire and holds up to Gulf Coast storms.

Coronado Exteriors lays CMU for general contractors, builders and homeowners across Houston and Fort Bend County. Jobs range from a single backyard privacy wall to every block on a commercial site. Our masons build each wall to the line, level and plumb, with reinforcement placed exactly where the plans call for it.

Residential CMU Walls We Build
Applications

Privacy & Perimeter Walls
A concrete block privacy wall replaces the backyard fence for good. We build property-line, perimeter and sound walls at the height your city and HOA allow.

CMU Retaining Walls
Grade changes and sloped lots need a wall that holds soil without leaning. Our block retaining walls are reinforced, grouted and drained.

Screen & Site Walls
Screen walls hide utilities, pool equipment and service areas while matching the look of the home or building.

Outdoor Kitchen & Fire Cores
Block is the backbone under most stone-clad outdoor kitchens and outdoor fireplaces. It's fire-safe and ready for veneer.
Our CMU Wall Construction Process
How We Build It
01Layout & Footing
We lay out the wall line from the plans. Every CMU wall starts on a steel-reinforced footing sized for its height and the soil, with rebar dowels to anchor the block.
02Laying the Block
Corners go up first. Every course in between is laid to a tight string line in a running bond, so the wall stays straight end to end.
03Level, Plumb & Reinforce
Each course is checked for level and plumb. Rebar and grout fill the cells as specified, and a bond beam ties the top together.
04Joints, Cap & Finish
Mortar joints are tooled tight to shed water. Then the wall is capped and finished with paint, stucco or veneer.
CMU Block Sizes & Types
Know Your Block
Standard CMU is sold by nominal size. An 8 x 8 x 16 block actually measures 7 5/8 x 7 5/8 x 15 5/8 inches, so each block plus its 3/8-inch mortar joint lands on an even 8 by 16 inches.
| Block | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| 4-inch CMU | Veneer backup, short garden walls and infill |
| 6-inch CMU | Low privacy walls and interior partitions |
| 8-inch CMU | Most privacy walls, enclosures and structural walls |
| 12-inch CMU | Tall walls, retaining walls and heavy loads |
| Bond beam & lintel block | Horizontal rebar and grout over openings and along the top of the wall |
| Split-face & cap block | Decorative textured faces and solid caps to finish the top |

Block Walls That Stand Up to Houston Clay
Built for Houston
Houston's expansive clay swells when it rains and shrinks in a drought. That movement is what cracks most block walls in the area. We build on footings sized for the soil, add control joints where the wall needs room to move and keep water draining away from the base.

What a CMU Block Wall Costs in Houston
Pricing
Every block wall is priced on its own plans. The biggest factors are the wall's length and height, which set the block count. Block size, reinforcement, drainage, site access and finish make up the rest. For commercial labor-only work, we price per block installed from your plans. For homeowners, we walk the site, measure everything and give you a written quote before any work starts.
CMU Block Wall FAQs
Common Questions
What does CMU stand for?
CMU stands for concrete masonry unit. It's the standard hollow concrete block used to build walls, enclosures, columns and foundations. Contractors say CMU, and most homeowners call it concrete block or cinder block.
Is CMU the same as cinder block?
They look alike, but they aren't quite the same. Old cinder blocks were made with coal ash, called cinders. Modern CMU is made from cement, sand and gravel, so it is stronger, heavier and meets today's building codes.
Is a CMU block wall better than a wood fence?
For lifespan, privacy, noise control and storm resistance, yes. A block wall costs more up front, but it won't rot, warp or need new boards every few years in Houston's humidity.
Do you offer labor-only CMU installation?
Yes. For general contractors and builders, we install CMU labor-only. You furnish the block and materials, and we price the work per block and bill by completed item.
Do you build commercial CMU walls?
Yes. We lay CMU on commercial projects in the Houston area, including dumpster enclosures, storage rooms, screen walls, columns and structural block built to stamped plans.
What size CMU block do I need?
Most privacy walls, enclosures and structural walls use 8-inch block. Taller walls and retaining walls often call for 12-inch block. Thin 4-inch block works for veneer backup and small garden walls. Your plans or engineer set the final size.
How tall can a concrete block privacy wall be?
It depends on your city, HOA rules and the wall's engineering. Many residential privacy walls run 6 to 8 feet. Taller walls and retaining walls often need engineered plans and a permit.
Do I need a permit for a CMU wall in Houston?
Many cities require a permit for walls over a certain height and for most retaining walls. Requirements vary between Houston, Harris County, Fort Bend County and surrounding cities. We'll tell you what your project needs.
How do you keep block walls from cracking in Houston clay?
The wall needs a footing sized for the soil and its height, steel reinforcement and control joints so it can handle movement. We also make sure water drains away from the base instead of soaking the soil under it.
How long does it take to build a CMU block wall?
Most residential walls take a few days to two weeks, depending on length, height and finish. The footing needs time to cure before block goes up, and stucco or veneer adds time at the end.
Can you put stucco or stone on a block wall?
Yes. CMU makes an ideal base for stucco, natural stone, manufactured stone veneer and brick. Many homeowners pick a finish that matches the house.
How much does a CMU block wall cost?
Cost depends on the wall's length, height, block size, reinforcement, site access and finish. Commercial labor-only work is priced per block installed. We give homeowners a written quote at no charge.
What areas do you serve?
Our office is in northwest Houston. We build CMU walls throughout the Houston area, including Cypress, Tomball, Spring, The Woodlands, Katy, Sugar Land, Cinco Ranch, Richmond and Rosenberg.
